Black tie is the one dress code where guessing is expensive. Get it slightly wrong and you are the only man in the room in a business suit.

Patent Leather Tuxedo Oxfords — Patent is traditional because it catches light the way the satin lapel does. A very highly polished plain black oxford is an acceptable substitute; a brogue, a loafer or anything with visible stitching detail is not. How to wear it
Fasten the jacket when standing, unfasten it when you sit. On a one-button tuxedo this is not optional — a buttoned jacket in a chair pulls badly across the front.
If you are wearing the waistcoat, leave the bottom button undone and make sure it fully covers the trouser waistband. Any shirt showing between waistcoat and trouser is the detail that reads as rented.
Nothing in your trouser pockets. A tuxedo trouser has no room for a phone and a wallet, and the outline shows.
Common questions
Can I wear a black suit instead of a tuxedo?
You can, and at a lot of events nobody will comment. But the difference is visible in photos — a tuxedo has a satin lapel and a satin trouser stripe that catch light, and a business suit does not. If black tie is printed on the invitation, wear the tuxedo.
Do I need a cummerbund if the suit has a waistcoat?
No. The cummerbund and the waistcoat do the same job, which is covering the trouser waistband. Wear one or the other, never both.
Is a black bow tie always right?
For black tie, yes. Coloured or patterned bow ties belong to creative dress codes, not this one. If you want personality, put it in the cufflinks or the pocket square.
